Barings Strengthens Asset-Based Finance Platform in Australia with Appointment of Pete Robinson
Barings, one of the world’s leading alternative asset managers, today announced the appointment of Pete Robinson as Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager within its Asset-Based Finance (ABF) platform.
Robinson will join the Australian ABF team (formerly Gryphon Capital Investments), a specialist Australian structured credit business that forms part of Barings’ global US$60 billion* ABF platform. The move coincides with the official rebranding of the Gryphon business to Barings ABF Australia, marking the final step in the business’s integration following its acquisition by Barings in March 2023.
His appointment comes as Barings continues to expand its ABF capabilities in Australia and globally, responding to growing client demand for solutions in this sector.
Robinson brings more than 20 years of experience in securitised credit, including over a decade in senior leadership roles. He joins from Challenger Investment Management, where he served as Head of Investment Strategy, Fixed Income.
In his new role, Robinson will work closely with the existing senior investment team to support portfolio management, enhance investment processes and contribute to the continued growth of the platform. He will also join the Investment Committee, alongside Steven Fleming, Ashley Burtenshaw and other senior members, further strengthening governance, investment oversight and decision-making.
The appointment enhances leadership depth as the Australian ABF business continues to scale as part of Barings’ global platform. It also supports closer integration across regions, enabling greater alignment of investment processes, product development and capabilities.
Since its acquisition, the Gryphon business has expanded its presence across both institutional and wealth channels, leveraging Barings’ global scale, capital base and investment infrastructure to enhance portfolio construction, risk management and client outcomes. The business invests across the structured credit spectrum, including public and private securitised assets, warehouses and whole loans.
Steven Fleming, Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager, said: “Pete’s appointment reflects the continued growth and evolution of Barings’ ABF platform. He brings significant experience in securitised credit and adds further depth to our senior investment team, strengthening our ability to scale the platform while maintaining the disciplined investment approach and local oversight that our clients expect.”
The appointment also supports the ongoing development and expansion of Barings' global ABF capabilities, which is focused on global investment and product initiatives, while deepening our strong leadership and continuity locally.
Robinson said: “Barings has built a highly compelling global asset-based finance platform, and the Australian business has established a strong track record in structured credit. I’m excited to join the team at a time of continued growth and integration, and to contribute to the further development of the platform, supporting clients with access to a broad range of structured credit opportunities.”
Importantly, the appointment does not change the leadership or governance of the existing investment team. Both Steven Fleming and Ashley Burtenshaw will remain Senior Portfolio Managers and members of the Investment Committee, continuing to lead portfolio management and investment decision-making.
